Let's start with the role
- Manage and maintain multiple MongoDB database environments using MongoDB Atlas / Ops Manager / Percona operator, and other distributed engines like cockroachDB ensuring high availability and performance.
- Design and implement redundancy, failover, and disaster recovery strategies.
- Configure, maintain, and optimize replica sets and sharded clusters.
- Monitor database performance and proactively identify tuning and optimization opportunities.
- Define and implement backup and recovery strategies aligned with data retention and business requirements.
- Optimize queries, indexing strategies, and data models for performance and scalability.
- Enforce security best practices, including access control, encryption, and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Diagnose and resolve production incidents, participate in on-call rotations, and support 24x7 operations when required.
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Develop and maintain documentation for best practices, operational procedures, migrations, and failover strategies.
- Use automation tools to streamline and standardize database operations.
- Lead a group of DBAs focusing on distributed databases, providing technical guidance, coaching, and support.
- Own and manage the team backlog, prioritizing operational work, improvements, and strategic initiatives.
- Coordinate workload distribution and ensure balanced on-call and operational responsibilities.
- Act as the primary point of contact for MongoDB / distributed databases related topics across engineering, SRE, and platform teams.
- Drive continuous improvement in monitoring, automation, reliability, and operational maturity.
- Support team growth through knowledge sharing, documentation, and skill development.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, and operational excellence.
What you will bring:
- 5+ years of experience working with large-scale distributed database systems, with strong focus on performance tuning and operations.
- Proven hands-on experience with MongoDB Atlas and Ops Manager / Percona operator.
- Strong experience with MongoDB high availability strategies, including replica sets and sharding.
- Solid operational understanding of NoSQL data modeling.
- Deep knowledge of database performance, scalability concepts, and tuning best practices.
- Experience with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery design.
- Ability to write and maintain Unix/Linux shell scripts is a strong advantage.
- Experience with RDBMS platforms (MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL) is considered a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent practical experience.

As some of our MongoDB and CockroachDB platforms already run on Kubernetes (OpenShift), the role requires:
- Working-level familiarity with Linux environments.
- Basic hands-on exposure to Kubernetes/OpenShift concepts.
- Understanding of Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Ansible and Terraform.
- Ability to understand deployments, troubleshoot issues, and collaborate effectively with SRE / Platform teams.
- Experience operating databases in containerized environments.
